Severn Trent Services Introduces Enhanced Bayoxide E33 Arsenic Removal Media

June 10, 2005

Severn Trent Services has introduced Bayoxide® E33P, a pelletized version of the granular Bayoxide® E33 arsenic removal media, which offers advantages over the original granular formulation. Bayoxide E33 media is developed by LANXESS Deutschland GmbH (formerly Bayer AG) exclusively for use by Severn Trent in its SORB 33® arsenic removal system. Bayoxide E33P has obtained NSF Standard 61 certification, the nationally recognized health effects standard for all devices, components and materials that contact drinking water.

The pelletized Bayoxide E33P media has the same high capacity for arsenic removal as the original media, which has been proven to remove arsenic to below the new federal maximum contaminant level (MCL) of 10 parts per billion (ppb). The pellet composition has a more uniform and sharper pore configuration, which improves product handling. As a result pressure drop is reduced across the media bed requiring less frequent backwashes. The pelletized Bayoxide E33P can also be loaded into the vessel in the dry state and creates minimal dust.

Severn Trent developed the SORB 33 process to reduce arsenic contamination across a range of water treatment system sizes, and the technology has been commercially proven to effectively and economically reduce arsenic below 3 ppb. Bayoxide E33 and Bayoxide E33P are dry, robust ferric oxide media designed for arsenic removal, providing long operating cycles and low operating costs.

SORB 33 and Bayoxide E33 were recently selected for use at eight demonstration sites in the EPA National Arsenic Treatment Demonstration Project, Phase II and had previously been selected for use at six of 12 Phase I sites. The project evaluates the efficiency and effectiveness of drinking water treatment technologies, process modifications and engineering approaches at various host sites for achieving compliance with the new federal arsenic standard.
