Mich. Environmentalists Push for More Water Protection

May 19, 2005

Michigan environmentalists are proposing new ways to protect the state's waters.

The proposals include requirements for permits for large-scale withdrawals of water and limits on private water sales.

The environmentalists say these proposals are a response to government stalling efforts.

An official of the Michigan Environmental Council claims the lack of state rules leaves the state's waters vulnerable to exploitation.

Nine organizations wrote the package and intend to lobby to get it enacted.

A 2002 Republican plan and a 2004 plan from Democratic Governor Granholm have not yet won approval.
