Sanitation District of L.A. County Wins Top Water Quality Award
The Sanitation District of Los Angeles County will receive the prestigious George J. Schroeper Medal for Innovative Wastewater Facility Design from the Water Environment Federation (WEF). The award will be presented during ceremonies held October 5 in New Orleans, Louisiana at WEFTEC.04, the Federation's 77th annual technical conference and exhibition.
The Sanitation District of Los Angeles County was selected for its "Full Secondary Treatment Facilities at the Joint Water Pollution Control Plant". The implementation of full secondary treatment encompasses several projects with a total value of approximately $380 million. The projects increased capacity at the facility for approximately $1.50 per gallon of daily capacity and the typical household user rates averaged to $10 per month. Both of these very economical figures prove the cost-effectiveness of the program.
The award is in memory of the Federation's third president, George J. Schroeper, an educator who stressed the economics in design of wastewater facilities. This award is presented to WEF members who have demonstrated excellence in conceiving and directing the design of a project to achieve substantial cost savings or economic benefit over other alternatives, while achieving environmental objectives.
The Sanitation District of Los Angeles County will be honored during WEFTEC.04, North America's largest water quality conference and exhibition, scheduled for Oct. 2-6, 2004 in New Orleans. More than 15,000 of the world's leading water quality experts and 800 companies featuring the latest in water quality technology are expected for this major event.
