The Instrumentation, Systems, and Automation Society (ISA) is accepting applications until September 1st for its new Certified Automation Professional (CAP) program. The CAP exam debuts October 7th at the 2004 ISA Expo in Houston Texas. Subsequent exams will be given October 9th and December 11th at select locations.

The creation of the CAP program is a milestone in the automation field. CAP will be the first program to comprehensively test the general disciplines automation professionals need for today's work environment.

According to Alan Carty, co-founder, President, and CEO of Automationtechies.com, "If you're going to be testing an [automation professional] today you've got to be testing him or her on not just those traditional technologies that were around 10 to 15 years ago, but on the things that he or she needs to know today in order to do the job." Carty, who also participated in the team that identified the key disciplines in the automation field, stresses that CAP should be well suited to test aptitude with the IT technologies that are changing the automation landscape.

ISA provides additional information about the CAP program on its website, www.isa.org/cap. Available information includes eligibility requirements, exam dates, key knowledge and skills, a detailed program handbook, and a study guide that's available for purchase. Anyone interested in taking the CAP exam on October 7th can apply through the CAP website.
