Dozens in Indiana Exposed to Unsafe Water

July 26, 2004

According to a recent public health assessment, 56 people living near a Superfund site in Elkhart, Ind., have been exposed to toxic chemicals in their drinking water.

Thirty-two people were exposed to trichloroethylene and approximately 24 people were exposed to carbon tetrachloride at levels that could result in serious health effects, according to the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry.

An arm of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the agency inspected nearly 600 wells and found 251 contaminated near a rail yard.

The report was compiled at the request of community members and updates a 1989 preliminary public health assessment. Officials have planned a community meeting on Aug. 3 for Superfund site residents to discuss the report.
