Connecticut DEP Seeks Tougher Filtration Standards for Naugatuck River

Water quality has been lacking in the Naugatuck River, and it is currently under scrutiny for not meeting clean water standards. Therefore, The Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is seeking tougher filtration standards to remedy the problem.

Pollution is heaviest in the area around Thomaston, where the DEP has notified three of the town's largest employers they must upgrade their filtration systems or lose DEP permits to discharge into the river.

The companies have valid permits that allow them to emit certain chemicals into the river. The companies routinely meet the permit standards, but the DEP said the companies will be asked to meet stricter guidelines. The state will issue new permits with stricter guidelines after more testing has been performed.
