AWWA Webcast: Converting to Chloramines

April 28, 2004
2 min read

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that 30 percent of surface water utilities will use chloramines for secondary disinfection after the Stage 1 DBPR and that the percentage will approach 60 percent as utilities make changes to comply with Stage 2 DBPR. Trouble-free conversion to chloramines involves understanding the chemistry at work, factors to consider in making the change, and key aspects of technical as well as public outreach issues associated with conversion.

Learn from experts on how to approach chloramine conversion during this Webcast - a live event you can access from your desktop computer via the Web-called "Converting to Chloramines."

This Webcast will provide information on

- Basics of chloramine chemistry, including properties (species including organochloramines), disinfection chemistry of chloramines, and DBPs (including NDMA)

- Design, implementation, and O&M basics, process control of dose and ratio, and involving the public and key outreach targets

- Chloramine decay: Preventing nitrification at the water treatment plant

- Monitoring and responding to nitrification in the distribution system, including assessing nitrification, regulatory considerations, and design and operational responses

The Webcast will also include a panel discussion and you'll be able to submit questions via e-mail and get real time answers to your questions.
