New Wastewater Treatment Plant Opens in Marion, Ill.

Dec. 3, 2003

Marion, Ill.’s, new $8.4 million wastewater treatment plant, which recently began processing waste, has been touted as being important to the continued economic development of the community.

The new facility is now one of two treatment plants that will better serve the community's needs. Whereas the old plant serves residents east of I-57 for the most part, the new plant will serve the area west of the interstate plus a portion of southwest Marion.

The project was mostly funded through city bonds issued over a year ago and repaid through an increase in sewage rates to residents. The remainder, about $1.5 million of the total project cost, was funded through a federal grant.
