Chemical in Water Supply Closes Businesses

July 22, 2003

In Chicago, city officials closed two River North restaurants and a hotel after discovering a potentially hazardous chemical in the building's water supply, reported The Chicago Tribune

No illnesses were reported, and a Department of Water Management spokesman said the contamination was limited to the building's water system. The department was notified after a green tint in the water at Joe's Seafood restaurant was found.

The department shut down the restaurant, ESPN Zone, the Homewood Suites hotel, Crunch Fitness and Eyeglass World after discovering glycol in the water at 40-60 E. Grand Ave., spokesman Tom LaPorte said. All five businesses are in the building.

The green chemical is normally found in air conditioners and is similar to antifreeze, LaPorte said. Department investigators suspect the glycol leaked into the water supply while repairs were being made recently to the building's air-conditioning system, LaPorte reported to the newspaper.
