A Windham couple are suing the town because of the high levels of sodium and chloride found in their water well.
Peggy Manion and Keith Cook say they are forced to spend $30,000 a month for bottled water to cook and shower with and to drink because dissolved salt from a town-owned sand-and-salt pile is seeping into the groundwater near their well.
They are asking the town to provide public water to their property and for the town to pay for damages.
The town's attorney Ken Cole says officials have been trying to reach a settlement with the couple for the past six months, but have been unable to reach agreement. The town offered the couple $5,000 but they say that's not enough to cover the damage. The case is now being negotiated by the town's insurance company.
