NSF International, The Public Health and Safety Company, announces new agreement with Doctor's Associates, Inc. (DAI), the franchisor of the Subway restaurant chain, to administer a water filtration program. NSF will act as the third-party testing and certification agency for the Subway Water Filtration Program.
The Subway Water Filtration Program provides testing criteria to ensure all of their prospective water filtration suppliers meet a minimum number of quality, performance and public health protection requirements. Requirements of the program, as developed by DAI include certification to NSF/ANSI Standard 42: Drinking Water Treatment Units - Aesthetic Effects and NSF/ANSI Standard 53: Drinking Water Treatment Units - Health Effects including reduction of chlorine, taste/odor, turbidity and the removal of cysts as tested using live Cryptosporidium. This program also requires compliance with all structural and material extraction requirements as set in these standards.
NSF is working directly with water treatment manufacturers to complete these requirements. DAI maintains a supervisory role in the project, obtaining status updates and final test reports on each water filtration system that is submitted for the Subway Water Filtration Program. NSF conducts annual unannounced audits of the supplier's manufacturing facility to ensure proper specifications and supplier records are kept. At least one contamination reduction claim is tested annually to ensure continued compliance with the Subway Water Filtration Program.
