Raw Sewage Swamps Sayreville, N.J., May Cause Environmental Problems

Raw sewage gushed into a river and flooded a New Jersey neighborhood after a sewer main burst.

Sixty million gallons of waste poured into the Raritan River, creating a stinky nightmare in Sayreville, Middlesex County, when the main ruptured just after 10 a.m.

"[Sewage] was shooting up out of the ground 10 feet into the air," said Chris Bardsley of Sayreville.

No one was evacuated, but more than two dozen homes had their backyards flooded and several cars sustained minor damage when sewage seeped inside.

State environmental officials said the sewage could choke fish by depleting oxygen levels in the river.
