Man Dies While Cleaning Companys Water Tank

Dec. 9, 2002

An Oak Lawn, Ill., man died when he apparently was overcome by fumes while cleaning a water tank in Niles, Ill., authorities said Sunday.

James Plante, 31, was found in a tank Friday at the Midwesco Filter Services plant where he worked in the 7700 block of Lehigh Avenue, said Sgt. Tom Davis of the Niles Police Department.

Plante was using chemicals to clean the tank and died of asphixia, a Cook County medical examiner's spokesman said. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:15 a.m. Friday, the spokesman said.

Davis said the Occupational Safety and Health Administration probably would investigate. Neither OSHA nor Midwesco officials could be reached for comment.
