Manitoba Government to Increase Water Protection

July 3, 2002
The Manitoba government is releasing details of new legislation it says will better protect drinking water.

Health Minister Dave Chomiak and Conservation Minister Oscar Lathlin released some details Tuesday.

The proposed legislation would introduce mandatory licensing for all public and semi-public water systems, which would have to meet drinking water quality standards.

The legislation would also require an assessment of these systems every five years and upgrades and repairs could be ordered.

Other measures in the proposed legislation would include the immediate reporting of abnormal water tests and to require water suppliers to disinfect and regularly test the water supply.

The legislation would also provide protection for whistle blowers and improve monitoring and enforcement.

The province says over $31-million has been invested to upgrade Manitoba's water systems since last spring.
