PA DEP Secretary Joins Hicks Creek Watershed Group For Stream Cleanup

April 22, 2002

On behalf of Pennsylvania Gov. Mark Schweiker, Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Secretary David E. Hess joined Sen. Ray Musto, Hicks Creek Watershed Association Coordinator Karen Szwast, and area residents for a stream cleanup yesterday along Hicks Creek in Exeter Borough, Luzerne County.

"Karen Szwast and her enthusiastic volunteers do a tremendous job educating the public about watersheds and their importance here in the Exeter area," Secretary Hess said. "I visited this watershed last year with Sen. Musto for a tour of a stream restoration project on Hicks Creek and was impressed with the community support for environmental protection."

Sen. Musto said, "Like Secretary Hess, I have been impressed with the work of the Hicks Creek Watershed Association. This cleanup is another example of the association's commitment to protecting the environment in the Exeter area."

The Hicks Creek Watershed Association was formed in August of 2001 to promote the environmental integrity of Hicks Creek watershed, including efforts to restore the entire length of the creek to a flowing stream and to raise public awareness on environmental and water quality issues.
