New Portable Water Bottle Filters Deliver High Contaminant Removal At Fast Drinking Rate

April 23, 2002

Sawyer Products has introduced two personal water bottles featuring Innova water filtration technology. Innova's unique, patented technology removes the most common contaminants found in tap water, rivers and streams, while delivering the taste and quality of bottled water.

According to Kurt Avery, president of Sawyer Products, "Innova filters exceed EPA guidelines for bacteria removal and meet or exceed industry- standards for chlorine and lead removal." Unlike some Innova competitors, laboratory testing was done at a drinkable flow rate, rather than the sipping rate. Avery cautioned that bottles passing a "sip" test but not a "drink" test may not offer adequate protection.

Sawyer water bottles are available in two Innova technology filtration levels. The Innova single stage system (Model SP2101) is available in a 16-ounce bottle with a 23 micron, activated composite filter that removes lead, chlorine, bad taste and odors from pretreated water. It can treat up to 20 gallons of water and generally needs to be replaced every 30-60 days.

For those concerned about biological contaminants, such as Cryptosporidium, E. coli and Giardia, Sawyer provides a dual filter system. The Innova 2/10 micron, Stage 2 system (Model SP2301) is available with a 20-ounce bottle and treats up to 80 gallons of water. The Stage 2 system includes an Innova primary carbon composite filter and an Innova secondary sub-micron filter to remove biological contaminants from most flowing fresh water.

The Innova Hollow Fiber Membrane found in the Stage 2 Filter was adapted from kidney dialysis procedures. Its cluster of fibrous tubes eliminates the dangerous bacteria that cause waterborne disease, as well as other biological contaminates. The Stage 2 System can remove greater than 99.9999 percent of E. coli bacteria and more than 99.99 percent of Crypto, as tested — notably greater amounts than the leading competitive brands.

Sawyer water bottles with Innova technology filters are available at Wal-Mart, Target, and many retail stores where camping gear is sold. They also are available online at the Sawyer Products' Web site.
