PCI-WEDECO Environmental Technologies, West Caldwell, N.J., has been selected to supply an integrated ozone generation system for the Little Falls Water Treatment Plant in Totowa, N.J., which is owned and operated by the Passaic Valley Water Commission (PVWC).
The General Contractor, Prismatic Development Corporation located in Fairfield, N.J., selected PCI-WEDECO Environmental Technologies to provide the advanced treatment technology as part of an upgrade to an existing drinking water treatment plant, which will produce just under 88 mgd of high-quality drinking water.
The project will include three state-of-the-art PCI-WEDECO EffizonÒ ozone generators each capable of producing 1,200 pounds per day (22.7 kg/h) of ozone. The entire ozone system will be able to produce up to 3,600 pounds per day (68 kg/h) at high concentrations reaching 12 percent by weight, using oxygen as the feed gas to maximize plant performance.
Black & Veatch, Kansas City, Mo., and Killam Associates, Millburn, N.J., designed the new ozone system as part of a major plant upgrade . The ozone treatment system is one of many new unit processes being added to the Little Falls WTP.
Ozone is a powerful oxidant, capable of oxidizing naturally occurring constituents that can adversely affect water quality in the form of color, tastes and odor. Ozone is also an extremely efficient disinfectant for controlling harmful bacteria, viruses and protozoa including Cryptosporidium and Giardia, to ensure safe drinking water for consumers. More and more plants are upgrading to ozone treatment, an environmentally friendly alternative to chlorine. Using ozone significantly reduces the amount of chlorine required minimizing the potential for chlorinated by-product formation, while producing excellent tasting, microbiologically safe drinking water. Ozone is also a cost effective and reliable technology that is playing an increasing role in water treatment as municipalities continue to upgrade their systems to provide the highest water quality to their customers.
