Pennsylvania Governor Schweiker Signs Bills

Feb. 22, 2002

Pa. Gov. Mark Schweiker signed a new bill into law for water and wastewater systems operators.

House Bill 1830, sponsored by Rep. Art Hershey (R-Chester), creates the State Board for Certification of Water and Wastewater Systems Operators. It renames the existing board and expands the membership to seven members. Board membership consists of the Secretary of the Department of Environmental Protection and six additional members appointed by the Governor.

It also requires the certification of all water and wastewater system operators. System owners must have certified operators in place within three years. All applicants for certification must also have criminal history check done by the State Police before the new board will review and act upon applications. The legislation passed the House and Senate unanimously and takes effect immediately.
