USFilter Wins Contract to Expand NY Wastewater Treatment Plant

Jan. 11, 2002

The village of Saugerties, N.Y., recently awarded a $700,000 contract to USFilter’s Envirex Products to supply eight rotating biological contactors (RBCs) and other equipment for its wastewater treatment plant.

The plant expansion was in response to the treatment demands from population growth and aging technology.

USFilter’s Envirex Products will provide eight RBCs with standard and high density welded media, as designed and specified by the village’s engineer, Brinnier and Larios, P.C., of Kingston, N.Y. This design provides an additional 35 percent media surface area in the original tankage without significant civil modifications.

The increase in surface area offers the village of Saugerties increased treatment and expansion capacity and the ability to take in additional septage from the surrounding community.

"The previous RBC system has cost the village of Saugerties thousands of dollars to maintain over the past few years," said senior project engineer Paul Van Wagenen, of Brinnier and Larios, P.C.

"While it’s not the lowest-priced RBC in the market, installing the Envirex® RBCs isn’t meant to be simply a temporary fix. The RBCs’ sturdy equipment design guarantees Saugerties long-term performance and reliability," he concluded.

The Envirex® RBCs include hydraulic load cells for monitoring biomass thickness, enabling operators to gauge process health. New baseplates will be used to mount the equipment directly onto existing anchor bolts, with each RBC having a new shaft-mounted drive package.

USFilter’s Envirex Products will also supply an aeration and blower package, enabling operators to effect positive biomass control on the RBCs.

The new biological contactor system with integral reinforced fiberglass enclosure will provide Saugerties with more than 20 years of service with minimal preventative maintenance.
