Calgon Carbon Plant Workers Strike

July 23, 2001

Calgon Carbon Corp. announced that the hourly workers at its Big Sandy activated carbon production and reactivation facility in Catlettsburg, Ky., chose to strike after negotiations broke down. The central issue is a pay-for-performance provision proposed by the company.

The five-year-old contract expired on June 6, and the 186 workers who are represented by the United Steelworkers of America Local 7047 were working without a contract while negotiations continued.

"Employees from our other facilities throughout the world are operating the Big Sandy plant and, if necessary, we can supply activated carbon products and services from three other plants," said John Stanik, vice president of manufacturing at Calgon Carbon. "We are confident that we will meet all customer demands during the strike."
