Water Contamination in Ashton

June 7, 2001

Test results show the drinking water in the city of Ashton, Idaho, is contaminated with E. coli. No fatalities or illness have been reported as of yet. The Department of Environmental Quality found the presence of fecal coliforms or E. coli in the water.

City officials do not know what is causing the contamination but have warned residents not to drink the water. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency officials have said not to boil the water because it will make the problem worse. Instead, they recommend adding eight to 10 drops of chlorine bleach to each gallon of water, mix and allow it to stand for 30 minutes.

This form of E. coli is associated with sewage or animal waste.
