Putting a Price on Water

Oct. 31, 2011

It is easy to take water for granted. In most areas in the U.S., except for the dry Southwest, people don’t think twice about how much work goes into treating and delivering clean water; they simply turn the tap and water flows—safe, available and cheap.

Depending on water availability in the region, population served and regulatory requirements, water systems are faced with various challenges; however, proper funding continues to be the single largest issue when it comes to treating and delivering safe drinking water.

As the industry continues to face a widening funding gap along with the reality of unlikely federal help, municipalities around the country will have to rethink the price of the services they offer and, more specifically, the price of water.

Do you think that the price of water in your service area should increase to match infrastructure needs and increasing demands? Please share your thoughts with us at [email protected].
