The 84th Annual Water Environment Federation Technical Exhibition and Conference (WEFTEC) is headed for Hollywood. Water quality professionals from all corners the world will convene at the Los Angeles Convention Center from Oct. 15 to 19.
Education Program
Workshops. Full-day workshops will be held on Oct. 15 and 16 on topics including public outreach, carbon footprint, odor control and wastewater microbiology. Additional registration is required.
Technical sessions. From Oct. 17 to 19, WEFTEC.11 will host more than 100 technical sessions. Each is categorized by track, providing comprehensive coverage of water quality topics. Opportunities include:
• Solving a Statewide Water Crisis: California’s Groundbreaking Regional Water Reuse Projects. Oct. 17, 1:30 to 5 p.m. Six reuse initiatives launched in response to California’s water shortage.
• Cost-Saving Success Stories for WWTPs. Oct. 17, 3:30 to 5 p.m. Presentations outline opportunities for reducing operating expenses.
• Storm Water Management Challenges and Solutions in the Urban Watershed. Oct. 18, 8:30 a.m. to noon. The session will examine storm patterns, pollutants of concern and pollution controls.
• Can You Hear Me Now? How to Inform Your Customers About Your Facilities. Oct. 18, 3:30 to 5 p.m. Experts weigh in on compliance, open houses and crisis communications.
• Developments in Nitrogen Removal. Oct. 19, 1:30 to 5 p.m. Presentations focus on topics including aerobic and anoxic phases and methanol emissions from denitrification.
Facility tours. Explore local facilities during your visit. Hosts include the Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts’ Joint Water Pollution Control Plant (learn more in the September issue of Water & Wastes Digest’s Plant Profile) and the city of Santa Monica’s Charnock Well Field Restoration Project. Additional registration is required.
Special Events
WEFTEC.11 includes a wealth of meetings, luncheons and receptions for fun and networking. Offerings include:
• WEF Bookstore. Oct. 15 to 19, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Browse water and wastewater titles and enjoy a break in the lounge.
• Fourth Annual Bicycle Ride to Support Water for People. Oct. 16, 8:30 a.m. to noon. Pedal through West Hollywood, Bel Aire and Beverly Hills to raise money for the nonprofit organization. Additional registration is required.
• Opening General Session. Oct. 17, 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Keynote speaker Dr. Rita Colwell, professor of public health and the 2010 Stockholm Water Prize Laureate, and Doc Hendley, founder and president of Wine to Water and one of CNN’s Heroes in 2009, will present. WEF President Jeanette Brown will recognize recipients of WEF awards and the Stockholm Junior Water Prize.
• New Member Celebration. Oct. 17, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. An opportunity for new and existing members to meet and exchange information.
• WEF Young Professionals Reception. Oct. 17, 8 to 11 p.m. Budding professionals are invited to mix and mingle at Elevate Lounge.
• Collection Systems Luncheon. Oct. 18, noon to 1:30 p.m. Dr. R. Tim Haug will lead a discussion titled “Sewage May Flow Downhill, But Where Does the Air Go?” WEF also will name the 2011 Collection Systems Award winner. Additional registration is required.
Exhibition
The exhibition hall will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, Oct. 17 to 19. Dedicated exhibit hall time will follow the Opening General Session, with exclusive hours from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Last year’s exhibition comprised 984 companies on a 290,000-sq-ft show floor.
