Through workshops, education sessions and exhibits, the treatment of wastewater will receive a prominent place at the Water Quality Assn. (WQA) Aquatech USA 2010 this year.

The conference and exhibition will be held at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Fla., March 9 to 12, 2010.

Technology Innovations

A number of manufacturers’ exhibits will demonstrate technologies that address wastewater treatment directly, such as ultrafiltration systems (UF). UF systems can reduce the waste volume considerably without the rapid decline in flux rate through the membrane that can be encountered with traditional filtration systems.

System design is also a large factor in reducing water waste, and two workshop presentations at the show will address these issues. The Industrial Reverse Osmosis (RO) System Design—Advanced Problem Solving Workshop will include an overview of factors affecting percent recovery. The Sustainable Industrial Design Workshop will present strategies for improving system efficiency and reducing environmental impact.

Sometimes the best treatment for wastewater is making sure there is less of it to treat. Technological innovations in water treatment equipment have led to lighter filtration media that require less water to backwash. Improved distributor design in water softeners decreases the volume of brine needed, and the percent recovery of RO systems has been growing considerably, sending less water to waste. A number of manufacturers exhibiting at this year’s WQA Aquatech USA show have incorporated these and other water-saving innovations in their products.

Expect a robust and informative show this year, even with the recession. Last year, 21% of exhibitors were first-time participants, and more than two-thirds said they planned to purchase products from exhibitors. Nine out of 10 attending at last year’s show were key decision makers in their companies.

At the Show

WQA Aquatech USA is the leading water industry event in North America. The show is sponsored by WQA and its partner, the Amsterdam RAI. It is the only show that represents every segment of the increasingly complex water treatment and supply market, including the household, commercial and industrial markets. Multiple applications are featured, including process water, drinking water, ultrapure and wastewater applications.

WQA is presenting a new product showcase this year. This display area comprises a presentation stage on the tradeshow floor that offers various demos and presentations that highlight new innovations and new products.

There will be several keynote addresses. Tim Miles’ presentation “The Pendulum in Marketing in 2010 and Beyond” will help you effectively communicate with your customers for years to come.

The second keynote is about how to effectively market the 2009 Softener Benefit study. The Battelle Institute Study on energy savings from water softeners was conducted in 2009.

In “Hidden Dangers in Residential Plumbing,” Marc Edwards, Ph.D., a civil engineering professor from Virginia Tech University, will share his findings on unforeseen, worrisome conditions in residences that can degrade the quality of potable water.

Educational sessions will explore topics such as innovative technologies, equipment troubleshooting and maintenance, emerging issues, sales and marketing, and system design.
