Equipment failure in Hilo Bay, Hawaii, has lead to two million gallons of partially treated wastewater spilling into the ocean.
Lyle Hirota, acting water division deputy chief, reported to Hawaii News that the water bypassed some of the treatment processes at the Hilo Wastewater Treatment Plant. The water was treated but not chlorinated. The spill was caused by a failed pump and alarm control system.
Warning signs were posted along the shoreline and the area has been closed to swimmers, boaters and fishermen.
