EPA Fracking Rules Delayed Until 2015

April 19, 2012
Drillers now have extra time to invest in new equipment that reduce emissions during hydraulic fracturing

As reported by Marketwatch, natural gas and oil drillers will now have until 2015 to purchase new equipment that reduces emissions while using hydraulic fracturing (fracking) techniques, the U.S.  Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) said Wednesday.

Now, emissions from fracking are released into the air, causing pollution, and chemicals are blasted underground, threatening groundwater near homes and schools. With the “green” technology required by 2015, the gas would be captured and sold by companies.

The EPA said it is phasing in these rules to “ensure emissions-reduction technology is broadly available.”
