Georgia Hit with Extreme Rain

100-year event has resulted in at least six deaths

For days, heavy rainfall has overwhelmed the Atlanta area, with resulting floods killing at least six people and closing portions of four major interstates. Some cities just west of the city were hit with up to 22 in. of rain in one week's time, with roughly 12 in. falling in a 12-hour period between Sept. 20 and 21.

On Sept. 21, the governor of Georgia declared the state's 17 hardest-hit areas in a state of emergency. Many parts of central and northern Georgia have been under flash flood and flood watches.
