Winnipeg and Calgary Select Trojan UV for Environmentally Friendly Wastewater Treatment

Trojan Technologies announced that both of the cities of Winnipeg, Manitoba and Calgary, Alberta have selected its ultraviolet (UV) disinfection equipment to treat the cities’ wastewater before being released into nearby rivers and lakes. Trojan’s UV systems use an environmentally-friendly ultraviolet disinfection process that destroys water-borne pathogens without the use of chemicals, such as chlorine.

The City of Winnipeg has made and is continuing to make significant investments at its three municipal wastewater treatment plants to protect the Red River, Assiniboine River and Lake Winnipeg for fish and other aquatic life as well as for the recreation and enjoyment of residents. The North End Water Pollution Control Center (NEWPCC), which discharges treated municipal wastewater to the Red River, will install three TrojanUV4000 Plus systems capable of treating up to 100 million gallons of wastewater each day. The South End Water Pollution Control Centre (SEWPCC), also operated by the City of Winnipeg, has had good success with its Trojan ultraviolet treatment system since installing it in 1999.

The City of Calgary has experienced rapid population growth over the past 5 years requiring the construction of a new municipal wastewater treatment plant. Construction of the Pine Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant will enable the City to protect the Bow River as the population increases. The Bow River originates in the Rocky Mountains and flows through Banff National Park, one of the most famous and most visited nature reserves in the world. It flows through the heart of Calgary, home to one million people and the commercial and cultural center of southern Alberta. After leaving Calgary, the river provides a source for irrigation to millions of hectares of prairie farmland, and is used recreationally by fly fishers, hikers, campers, canoeists, kayakers, birdwatchers and naturalists.

The City of Calgary will install a TrojanUV3000 Plus ultraviolet disinfection system to safely and efficiently disinfect its wastewater before it is discharged into the Bow River. Trojan’s UV equipment is also installed at Calgary’s Fish Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant where it has been providing disinfection since 1997.

"By using Trojan’s reliable UV systems in place of traditional chemical disinfection methods, the Bow River can continue to be a thriving trout river as well as a source of enjoyment for the citizens of Calgary."

Disinfection by UV technology enables treatment facilities to meet increasingly stringent environmental protection standards in an economically sound manner. It is much safer than chemical treatment as there are no toxic chemicals to transport, handle or store and no risk of hazardous leaks or spills to the environment or the neighboring community.
