Detroit Selects USFilter for $5 Million Wastewater Upgrade

Feb. 21, 2001

The city of Detroit has selected USFilter to upgrade its secondary wastewater clarifiers as part of the city?s effort to eliminate maintenance and operation costs.

The stainless steel, corrosion resistant equipment, provided by USFilter?s General Filter Products of Ames, Iowa, will be used for the rehabilitation of the existing 200-foot clarifiers at the Jefferson Avenue Wastewater Treatment Plant.

"Some municipalities use aluminum or fiberglass equipment, but the stainless steel construction virtually eliminates maintenance requirements. This expenditure proves our commitment to specify ?quality,? ensure infrastructure integrity, and reduce preventable future expenditures," stated Awni Qaqish, PE, the city of Detroit water and sewerage department?s assistant director of engineering.

The $5 million contract includes stainless steel collection troughs (launders), V-shaped weir plates that will be bolted to the troughs for easy adjustment, and scum collection mechanisms for 21 secondary clarifiers at the plant. USFilter will manufacture the equipment at its facilities in Ames, Iowa and Thomasville, Ga.

The city of Detroit treats approximately 1.5 billion gallons of wastewater per day at the Jefferson Avenue Wastewater Treatment Plant. Serving more than 3 million people in 76 communities, the plant is one of the largest wastewater treatment facilities in the world.

In recent years, USFilter also has supplied technologies to three other Detroit water plants including the Detroit Waterworks Park, Marine Terminal, and Detroit River Outfall. Some of the technologies include USFilter?s LME systems for surface water treatment, and chlorination/dechlorination and disinfection equipment.

The USFilter partners include Waldridge Aldinger, the general contractor, and representative DuBois, Cooper and Cowles who represent USFilter in the state of Michigan. The Detroit-based firm of Holliday AMR Supply Co. assisted in the procurement of the order.

Founded in 1935, USFilter?s General Filter Products has thousands of drinking water and wastewater treatment installations. USFilter, a Vivendi Water company, is the leading global provider of commercial, industrial, municipal and residential water and wastewater treatment systems, products and services, with operations in more than 100 countries.
