Aug. 16, 2004

Recent spot checks show that more than half the bottle water brands in Guangdong, China markets are below national standards, The Washington Times reported.

High content of microorganisms–1,550 times higher than the maximum permitted was found in a brand produced in Zhaoqing City, Baosheng Spring Water, reported Xinhua, China's main government-run news agency.

The spot checks covered 200 brands produced in eight cities including Guangzhou, Zhuhai, Shaoguan, Zhongshan, Jiangmen, Yangjiang, Zhaoqing and Qingyuan. Only 87 were found to meet national standards.

Microorganism content exceeded the maximum permitted in national standards in almost half of the sampled brands, which could cause nausea or diarrhea, particularly in the elderly and children, the report said.
