Leavitt Announces Two EPA Staff Additions

Nov. 11, 2003

Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Mike Leavitt has announced two additions to his new office staff. Rich McKeown will serve as senior counselor, and Cynthia Bergman will serve as press secretary.

"I spent my first couple of days meeting with the tremendous people here at EPA and will continue to seek their input and learn from their expertise," said Leavitt. "Rich and Cynthia will complement this team of dedicated people and help us meet the core mission of the agency."

McKeown served as chief of staff for the former Utah governor from 1999 to 2003, and served as a commissioner of the Utah State Tax Commission from 1996 to 1999. Prior to his public service, he was a partner in a law firm in Salt Lake City. McKeown is an alumnus of Ohio University and the University of Utah School of Law.

Bergman will serve as EPA press secretary in the Office of Public Affairs. In 2002 Bergman handled communications for the Maine Republican Party, focusing on U.S. Senator Susan Collins's (R-ME) re-election campaign.

Previously, she worked at Ogilvy Public Relations Worldwide in New York City and was press secretary for U.S. Senator Slade Gorton (R-WA) from 1997-2000.

Leavitt is expected to announce additional staff appointments in the coming weeks.
