Residents of Galway, Ireland who have been unable to drink tap water for the past month will now have access to bottled water at a cheaper price, thanks to the city’s mayor.
According to Irishhealth.com, mayor Niall Brolchain announced that bottled water will be available at a reduced at a number of outlets in the city. Areas affected include Barna, Carnmore, Athenry, Claregalway, Corofin, Headford, Lackagh, Oranmore, Tuam and Turloughmore.
Due to a recent cryptosporidium outbreak, approximately 100,000 people in Galway city and areas in the county have been unable to drink water or even use it to brush their teeth. Some residents have reported that they are paying five or more euros (US$6.7) on water a day.
Joe McGrath, Galway city manager, reported to Irishhealth.com that they are working on a solution that should be in place before September.
Over 160 people have reportedly been affected by cryptosporidium, falling ill with a fever, diarrhea and stomach cramps.
