Australian Prime Minister John Howard announced that the Federal Government will contribute $2.6 million to a project that will harvest storm water on the central coast of New South Wales.
The project intends to help protect the Porters Creek wetland and will cost $16 million. The Wyong Shire Council will contribute $13.6 million.
The Australian reports that the plan is to collect storm water from urban areas, and then treat and reuse it to maintain the natural cycles of the wetland.
The project is subject to approval by the New South Wales government. If it passes, then the central coast will be the first region in NSW to treat and reuse storm water flows.
Prime Minister Howard told The Australian that the country is in need of more recycled water.
Construction is set to begin January 1, 2007 and should be completed in 18 months.
