Grit Removal System Provides Strength in the Storm

With aging infrastructure and frequent storm events, Gills Creek WWTP faced significant grit loading challenges. The grit removal system was put to the test during South Carolina’s wettest May on record – and delivered critical protection when flows surged.

During record-setting storms, the HeadCell® and Hydro GritCleanse™ system at Gills Creek WWTP proved its performance by capturing 25-30 tons of low-organic grit per event. While flooding impacted much of the state, the system protected the plant, ensuring uninterrupted operation and directing grit to landfill instead of throughout the treatment plant. This reliable performance during extreme weather reinforced the system’s value in safeguarding critical infrastructure and reducing maintenance burdens during high-flow, high-debris storm events.
