Summary
The “silver tsunami” is already in full swing and a large portion of the workforce has less than 10 years of experience. We lost the generation in between, so how do we navigate and not just survive, but thrive as we go forward?
Today’s newer workforce is different than the workforce of old. They are not lazy, they are motivated differently and if you do not pivot, you will struggle to not drown as the river of new people come and go.
The baby boomers are nearly played out, command and control is a dinosaur (let it become extinct). The younger generations (Millennials and Gen Z) want to be part of something bigger than themselves. They want to have a mission, a purpose, a value beyond the paycheck. Utilities have to define that purpose and “sell” it.
You don’t want a workforce that “follows orders”. You want a workforce that thinks critically, solves problems, in short is empowered. Building “psychological safety” is essential to fuel innovation and collaboration. Take a journey down a new street to a new organization and a new culture that will lead your wastewater system to success.
