House Passes Major Water Bill in California

July 13, 2004

The House on Friday passed H.R. 2828, the Water Supply, Reliability, and Environmental Improvement Act, unanimously by voice vote.

H.R. 2828 is intended to improve water quality throughout the Delta, California's most important watershed, and authorizes water quality projects in San Francisco, San Joaquin and Sacramento counties, including technology to reduce agricultural run-off.

The bill is designed so water quality, water supply and yield and fisheries protection all advance together.

The bill also authorizes continued federal assistance to water recycling and desalination projects, assists local and regional communities in implementing regional water improvement plans and expedites projects that will ensure a long-term reliable water supply.
