The American Water Works Assn. (AWWA) will hold its Annual Conference & Exposition June 19 to 22 at McCormick Place West in Chicago. The Opening General Session on June 20 will feature Jim Cantore, veteran weather reporter for The Weather Channel. Cantore has covered every major weather event for the past 25 years, from Hurricane Katrina to Superstorm Sandy.
Exposition & Tours
More than 500 exhibitors will showcase the latest water industry products and services at the exposition. The trade show floor also will host the AWWA Pavilion and the International Resource Center, along with poster sessions, round tables and the Career Center Job Fair.
Competitions also will occupy the show floor, among them Pipe Tapping, Meter Madness, Top Ops, World Water Cup, Best of the Best Tap Water Taste Test and Hydrant Hysteria.
Many local facility tours are available, including behind-the-scenes experiences at the Jardine Water Purification Plant, the largest conventional treatment plant in the world; Shedd Aquarium and Lincoln Park Zoo; the massive Stickney Water Reclamation Plant, which can treat up to 1.4 billion gal per day; the Highland Park Water Treatment Park; the Main Stream Pumping Station; and the Evanston Water Treatment Plant.
Professional Program & Networking
This year’s professional program presents solutions to water sector challenges in a variety of defined tracks of professional sessions, from small systems management and operations, to best practices for watershed management, to advances in water treatment and beyond.
Networking opportunities include a June 20 reception for international visitors and a June 21 water industry luncheon with comedian, actor, radio host and author Jay Mohr. Students and young professionals can engage in a scavenger hunt at 10 a.m. on June 20 or chat with water industry leaders at a student and young professional lunch meetup the same day.
