The Water Environment & Reuse Foundation (WE&RF) announced the election of five new board members to the Board of Directors. Joining the Board, which is composed of volunteer members from municipal utilities, industry, government agencies, corporations and academia, are Pinar Balci of NYC Department of Environmental Protection, Jonathan Lanciani of Sustainable Water, Shayne Cunis of Watercare Services Limited, Hardeep Anand of Miami-Dade Water and Sewer, and Gary ReVoir of Tetra Tech Inc.
Balci specializes in planning, coordination, and implementation of sustainability and energy projects and their related policy. With more than 20 years of experience in the water industry, currently, she is the assistant commissioner of Bureau of Environmental Planning and Analysis at the New York City Department of Environmental Protection, managing sustainability programs including water resources planning, storm water management, green infrastructure, climate resiliency and demand management. She also supports the CSO Long Term Control Planning efforts and manages DEP’s water energy nexus portfolio for New York City's 2015 sustainability plan, OneNYC. Balci has previous experience at the South Florida Water Management District and Ecology and Environment Inc.
Lanciani is the president and founder of Sustainable Water—a project development and water management consulting firm specializing in district-scale wastewater reclamation and reuse. Lanciani has 27 years of experience in the industrial water space, with specific focus on district energy, automotive, food and beverage, as well as the commercial and institutional sectors in North America. Lanciani has championed water conservation and water recycling opportunities throughout his career. Prior to forming Sustainable Water, he was the senior director of strategic planning, business development and marketing at ChemTreat, a Danaher Co. Lanciani’s passion for water conservation and recycling has helped global corporations and institutions alike.
Cunis is responsible for Watercare’s operational management of drinking water and wastewater systems, along with asset protection, trade waste and asset maintenance management in the Auckland Region. This includes serving 1.4 million customers with assets of $8.6 billion and leading a team of 270. With nearly 30 years of water experience, his entire professional career has been in the water industry and he is committed to delivering excellent customer service and striving for continual improvements in our industry. Cunis has lead a transformational change within the staff at Watercare and watched young engineers develop into outstanding members of the water profession. He has an in-depth knowledge of the current issues facing the water industry in New Zealand and familiarity with international best practice for water supply operations and management.
Anand has dedicated his career to the water and wastewater industry, as well as the advancement of public policy and actions to benefit the environment and the community through environmental research and the application of technology. Anand has more than 25 years of professional engineering experience along with a combination of program management and leadership experience in the public and private sectors. As deputy director for the Miami Dade Water & Sewer Department (MDWASD), he oversees the implementation of the $13.5 billion Capital Improvement Program for the utility to deliver innovative projects with the objective of positioning MDWASD as a world-class utility. Anand previously served as a high-level manager at the Miami‐Dade County Department of Environmental Resources Management, as public works director with the City of Fort Lauderdale, and as an engineering consultant over a variety of utility, storm water, environmental, solid waste and information technology projects. Anand is actively positioning MDWASD as a utility of the future by transforming the utility’s organizational culture and adopting the tenants of effective utility management.
For the past 29 years, ReVoir has been dedicated to furthering the development of strategies and successful implementation of new technologies to promote affordable, efficient and sustainable water supplies. As vice president at Tetra Tech within the Water Environment & Infrastructure unit, he has been a part of the company’s success and is currently responsible for overseeing many of the technical aspects of the firm’s water reuse projects as well as many wastewater assignments, nationally. ReVoir’s experience encompasses a range of wastewater collection, transmission, treatment and effluent disposal planning, as well as water supply, treatment and distribution. ReVoir’s experience also includes funding, permitting, final design, construction administration, start-up, and project management with emphasis on advanced water and wastewater treatment processes, as well as potable reuse.
