Hurricane Maria Hits Puerto Rico

Sept. 21, 2017
The entire island of Puerto Rico is left without power

Hurricane Maria hit the Caribbean Sept. 20 and 21, devastating Puerto Rico and hitting the Dominican Republic shortly after. A Category 3 hurricane Sept. 21, Maria carried winds of 115 mph.

Puerto Rico suffered serious damage. The island saw major flooding, and up to 35 in. of rain is expected to have fallen on some parts of the island. Flash flood warnings covered all areas except the southwest part of the island. Puerto Rico is completely without power, leaving more than 3 million people without telecommunications.

Maria is expected to move into the Turks and Caicos and Bahamas, but its track beyond the weekend is uncertain. Current forecasts do not show a direct hit on the U.S. East Coast, but it is too early to tell its exact path.
