American Water announced that Mark S. Smith has been named vice president and chief information officer (CIO). The company also announced the addition of Malcolm D. Conner as president of its American Water Resources Inc. subsidiary.
Smith joined American Water in 2008 and brings to his position nearly 30 years of technology expertise and leadership experience in the development, implementation and support of IT solutions. As CIO, Smith is responsible for all aspects of information technology service delivery and management including Information Technology Services’ (ITS) support of American Water’s current business transformation and SAP migration.
In his previous position as senior director of ITS, he led the Business Application Development team and the Project Management Office, overseeing ITS projects including infrastructure investment, application upgrades and new software investments. Prior to joining American Water, he held several management positions with Siemens Medical Solutions and Shared Medical Systems over a more than 20-year tenure, including group manager of management information systems and director in the Shared Services Office.
In his role as president of American Water Resources Inc., Malcolm Conner is responsible for continued growth of this segment of the company’s market-based businesses, identifying and capitalizing on key new market development opportunities through partnerships and new distribution channels.
Conner brings to his position more than 20 years of marketing, business strategy, strategic planning and management experience, primarily in the information services industry. Most recently, he was vice president and general manager of banking and securities law at Wolters Kluwer, Law & Business in New York, where he managed all aspects of two legal information and solutions business units. Other prior experience includes senior vice president/general manager roles at Reed Elsevier, Thomson Reuters and McGraw-Hill’s Standard & Poor’s business unit, as well as public accounting, financial and consulting roles with Arthur Anderson & Co., Kraft Foods Inc. and Campbell Soup Co.
