Specialists to Meet on Protecting Drinking Water Sources

April 15, 2004

Source Protection Planning will be the focus of discussions as drinking water specialists from across Ontario meet in Niagara Falls, May 9-12, for the Joint Annual Conference of the Ontario Water Works Association (OWWA) and the Ontario Municipal Water Association (OMWA).

Protecting drinking water at its source is viewed as the key factor in the multi-barrier approach to ensuring safe drinking water. From the Walkerton Inquiry and the recommendations of Justice O'Connor, the provincial government is soon to announce details of a watershed-based source water protection program.

Researchers, technicians, plant operators and municipal officials will be examining regulatory and financing proposals that will not only protect our water at the source but also maintain and enhance water treatment and distribution facilities.

The opening plenary begins Monday, May 10, at 8:30 a.m. with keynote speaker Dr. Jeffrey Griffiths, Tufts University School of Medicine, Boston, examining the role of source water protection in preserving public health. Through to the closing plenary on Tuesday afternoon, May 11, government regulators and drinking water professionals will focus on the technology, the policies and the politics that affect the safety and supply of Ontario's drinking water.
