To prevent future water shortages, Egypt will construct the country’s largest ever water treatment plant, according to President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi.
The prospect of future water shortages arrives in the midst of a conflict with another African nation, Ethiopia, who is still mired in the massive undertaking of constructing a massive dam, which will likely have substantial effects on Egypt’s water supply.
Egypt claims that the construction of this hydroelectric plant in Ethiopia would cause an inequitable water share of the Nile River, a significant water source for both nations. However, Ethiopia denies that a disparity in distribution would occur.
“We are only doing what we need to do so we can solve a potential problem,” Sisi said. “We will not allow a water problem to materialize in Egypt. Water must be secured for everyone.”
This development follows the failure of an attempted agreement between Egypt, Ethiopia and Sudan in November 2017.
