The American Water Works Association (AWWA), the world's largest organization of water supply professionals, has launched its annual National Drinking Water Week with the theme, "The Wonder of Water."
For more than 30 years, Americans have celebrated National Drinking Water Week and the benefits of a clean, healthy water system.
"A safe and uninterrupted flow of drinking water remains a commitment of the Association. We celebrate National Drinking Water Week knowing that America's water ranks among the cleanest and most pure in the world," noted AWWA Executive Director Jack Hoffbuhr. "Clean, safe water is essential to our lives and our lifestyles, every single day."
Whether they are conservationists or casual users, Americans are learning to take pride in our greatest resource. We use 341 billion gallons of fresh water per day, and much of it is treated and delivered by the more than 54,000 community water systems in the U.S.
In 1988, AWWA garnered national attention when it formed an alliance with the League of Women Voters, the Association of State Drinking Water Administrators, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to promote the event. The weeklong observance was declared in a joint congressional resolution and signed by then-President Ronald Reagan.
