Conference on Water Rights to be Held in Salt Lake City

The U.S. Committee on Irrigation and Drainage has issued a call for papers for a USCID Water Management Conference to be held October 13-16 in Salt Lake City, Utah.

The theme of the conference will be Water Rights and Related Water Supply Issues.

An issue facing water users nearly everywhere is "who has the right to use water when available supplies do not meet all the demands for the water."

Because the earliest pioneers first diverted water for irrigation, water users, water districts and governments have endeavored to develop a system of water rights that can serve the public interest while also protecting vested rights, water quality and the environment. A key component of any discussion of water rights is how to best conserve, distribute and use limited supplies of water, in the context of the related economic, environmental and social issues.

The conference will provide a forum to discuss the myriad of issued relating to water rights and the appropriation and distribution of water, including applications of technology. Conference organizers expect oral and poster session presentations to cover a wide range of topics, including local or specific applications, as well as discussions involving large river basis and more general approaches to managing water rights and supplies.
