Detroit Water Worker Rescued from Hole

A Detroit Water and Sewerage Department employee was rescued after being trapped in a hole Wednesday morning.

The employee was filling a ditch in the area of Cherbenau and Orleans on Detroit's east side when his dump truck slid back into a five-foot hole. The man's leg was trapped between the truck and the side of the hole. Firefighters used a tow truck and water department equipment to extricate the man, who was trapped for about 45 minutes.

"We used the water board equipment, their heavy-duty tow truck as well as their crane," said Detroit Fire Department Capt. Barry LeBeau. "We used one as an anchor and we took the other tow truck, pulled (it) off about three inches and that's all the clearance we needed and we rescued the man out of the hole."

The man was taken to a local hospital to be treated.

The status of his condition was not known by mid-afternoon Wednesday, but he apparently suffered a broken leg.
