Northampton, Mass., adopts GIS-integrated asset management

VUEWorks, Inc. has announced that the city of Northampton, Mass., has adopted its VUEWorks software for web-enabled, GIS-integrated work order and asset management.

“Our goal is to utilize asset management to improve response, quality of work and communication with our citizens,” commented Northampton Mayor Mary Clare Higgins. Northampton will use VUEWorks to view and track work orders for all city departments by clicking on a GIS map. The city of 29,287 is using VUEWorks in production in its Central Services department. The Department of Public Works, which is working with S E A Consultants of Cambridge, Mass.,, will be the next group to be deployed.

VUEWorks will eventually be used by all departments, including planning, fire and police, as well as the city clerk’s and mayor’s offices.

“User buy-in is critical to the success of a work order and asset management implementation,” commented Ruth McGrath, database developer and analyst for Northampton. “We evaluated many asset management solutions before selecting VUEWorks, which was both the most affordable and easiest to deploy as a web-based solution. VUEWorks provides the capabilities, flexibility and ease-of-use that has helped Northampton’s employees not just adopt an asset management solution, but to do so with enthusiasm and a ‘can do’ attitude. Our Central Services department picked it up the day after installation and ran with it. They are now creating and tracking work orders for everything from major projects to light bulbs that need replacing. VUEWorks helps us work more efficiently and has eliminated duplicate data entry.”

“We at SEA are excited about the opportunity to assist the City of Northampton with VUEWorks implementation to manage its infrastructure,” commented Stephen Geribo, P.E., senior technical advisor for SEA Consultants, Inc. “While many municipalities are thinking about asset management, Northampton is taking a leadership role in utilizing risk-based tools to more efficiently and effectively operate and maintain its vital infrastructure. This is certain to pay long-term dividends in avoiding unplanned system failures, ensuring that every dollar is spent on the most important things, and that the city is getting the optimum useful life out of every asset."

“VUEWorks allows municipalities to derive tremendous value from their GIS investment,” commented Alex von Svoboda, VUEWorks’ vice president of sales and marketing. “With VUEWorks, cities can make informed maintenance decisions rather than relying on ‘gut’ feeling. It facilitates daily workflow and puts the data they need at their fingertips when required, so that field personnel can focus on their task and not waste time searching for supporting information. Northampton’s rapid and successful deployment of VUEWorks demonstrates that asset management can be easily implemented and integrated into any-sized organization’s work processes.”
