Mass. Man Buys Water, Wins Big

July 10, 2003

A lucky Boston area resident hit it big on a lottery scratch ticket purchased as an afterthought while buying water on July 4.

William Raynard of Middleton, Mass., won $1 million in the Pharaoh's Gold instant Lottery game, a five-dollar game that debuted in January.

"I stopped in the store to buy some water, and I decided to buy a Lottery ticket, which is something I rarely do," he said. "I scratched it in the car with my wife by my side. We both thought it was wrong. It didn't hit us until Monday when we picked up our check."

Raynard will collect $50,000 before taxes each year for the next 20 years.

His family is planning on investing the winnings.
