Jacobs Announces Design-Build Joint Venture of CDM/Sverdrup Civil

Dec. 28, 2000
Jacobs Engineering Group Inc., subsidiary Sverdrup Civil Inc., has announced that Orange County Utilities has selected the design-build joint venture of CDM/Sverdrup to expand the South Water Reclamation Facility (SWRF), part of Orange County's nationally recognized wastewater treatment and water reclamation system.

The project is valued at $56 million. The initial facility improvements must be online by February 2001, only nine months after notice to proceed.

The joint venture team will expand and improve the existing wastewater treatment plant to achieve an overall plant capacity of 50 million gallons per day. The reclaimed water from the plant is discharged to the Water Conserv II system operated jointly by Orange County and the City of Orlando. Water Conserv II, now in its 14th year of operation, provides reclaimed wastewater for a combination of citrus irrigation and groundwater recharge and is the largest water reuse facility of its kind in the world. The team will be responsible for phased design and construction to meet multiple schedule milestones during the 3-year project.

In making the announcement, Jacobs Group Vice President H.G. Schwartz stated, "Sverdrup and CDM will work closely with county operations staff to ensure the vital facility remains online during all phases of construction. This is particularly crucial during the winter months, when the citrus irrigation system serves double duty as freeze protection for millions of dollars of Florida's most noted export."

"We're pleased to be working with Sverdrup on such an extensive project," added CDM Engineers & Constructors Principal Richard Slovarp. "With CDM and Sverdrup's combined talent and dedication, this joint venture is certain to deliver a facility of which the county and our team members will be proud."

Completion of the expansion program in 2003 will provide capacity sufficient to serve this fast-growing tourist destination until 2020.
