Itron Modernizes Jerusalem Water Undertaking Infrastructure

Metering solution allows organization to track, use water resources more efficiently

Itron, Inc., a company dedicated to the resourceful use of energy and water, announced that it has completed the modernization of Jerusalem Water Undertaking’s (JWU) water system infrastructure. A non-profit, independent, civil organization in the Ramallah and Al-Bireh Governorate of Palestine, JWU is using Itron’s AMI-ready, volumetric water meters to accurately and reliably deliver water to residential customers and reduce apparent non-revenue water losses in its system.

Itron’s solution benefits JWU’s service territory, which includes the central urban area of Ramallah & Al-Bireh Governorate, 48 surrounding villages and multiple refugee camps, in addition to the northern part of Jerusalem. The metering solution enables the organization to track and use water resources more efficiently with optimal accuracy ensured by the meter technology. For JWU, the solution will improve operational efficiency and provide better avenues to conserve Palestinian water resources for smarter use today and in the future. In addition, Itron supplied JWU with a cold water test bench for meter verification and professional testing of accuracy.

“Water resources in Palestine have long been characterized by great obstacles, including constant water shortages. Our community saw the need for advanced technology to balance water supply and water demand, ensuring an equitable share of available water quantities for all,” said Abdel Khaleq Karmi, general manager at JWU. “We’re pleased to implement Itron’s water solution to help protect, preserve and manage water resources for adequate future water supply. We expect this project implementation to have a positive impact on reducing apparent water losses.”

“Itron’s technology will bring significant value to Jerusalem Water Undertaking. We are excited to hear about their realized benefits following the successful installation of this project,” said Ayman El Shareif, Itron director of sales for Water Middle East. “At Itron, we are committed to the success of our customers, ensuring the best tools and technology are in place to position their community for a more sustainable and resourceful future.”
