The event showcased the city-parish’s investment of more than $250 million in facility upgrades to the plant

Brasfield & Gorrie announced that an international group of water and wastewater professionals recently visited the contractor’s jobsite at the South Wastewater Treatment Plant in Baton Rouge, La., as part of the Water Environment Federation’s Annual Technical Exhibition and Conference (WEFTEC).

“This tour presented a unique opportunity for industry leaders to see the major systems we are building to support needed environmental upgrades in urban facilities, and it enabled this global group of water and wastewater professionals to benchmark our work in this field,” said Brasfield & Gorrie Regional President Brian Barr.

Approximately 80 conference attendees participated in the tour, which was hosted by Baton Rouge Mayor-President Melvin L. “Kip” Holden, the Baton Rouge City-Parish Department of Public Works, program manager CH2M Hill, general contractor Brasfield & Gorrie and the host of engineers and equipment manufacturers involved in the project.

The event showcased the city-parish’s investment of more than $250 million in facility upgrades to the plant as part of the Sanitary Sewer Overflow (SSO) Control and Wastewater Facilities Program. Constructed in three phases, the improvements will accommodate future flows, allow the consolidation and closure of the Central Wastewater Treatment Plant, improve environmental compliance and upgrade treatment technologies and efficiencies.

Brasfield & Gorrie has served as general contractor for all three phases of the improvements and will complete the final phase in 2015. Working at the plant continuously since 2009, Brasfield & Gorrie completed the first phase of work in 2011 and the second phase in 2013.
